Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is derived from the Marijuana plant. It does not cause the “high” that you would get from marijuana. It is not impairing, and it is known to be non-addictive. CBD can be taken from the part of the plant known as Hemp. Hemp is defined as any part of the cannabis plant that contains less than 0.03% of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which causes the mind-altering effect of marijuana.

In 2018, the FDA legalized CBD oil if it comes from Hemp. It was declassified as a controlled substance. However, some states did not follow the feds, and CBD is still illegal in those states. CBD oil has many benefits, and can be used as a topical cream, inhaled through smoking or vaping, orally, in a liquid and taken under the tongue, tablets, patches, and even put into food. The CBD oil industry is booming, as people in the United States are looking for alternative therapies and treatments for health issues.

CBD oil is known to help the following conditions:

Anxiety:

One of the most common uses of CBD oil is to treat anxiety. Many feel that CBD oil does not have the side effects that antianxiety medications cause. The National Institute of Health (NIH) conducted research on using CBD oil to treat anxiety disorders. In this study, CBD oil was found to have strong positive outcomes when treating anxiety disorders.

Insomnia:

CBD oil helps the hypothalmus in the brain regulate stress. This helps you fall asleep faster. It also is known to help regulate the circadian rhythm. Our circadian rhythm can be disrupted for a variety of reasons, including work schedules, travel, and some medical conditions. Dr. Daniel Whitelocke states “CBD can suppress this dysregulated cycle of stress hormone overactivation and equalize the sleep and wake rhythm through counteracting hormones.”  People who work shift work, such as nurses and police officers, can get relief from their insomnia with CBD oil. (This is one of my favorite products for sleep, get it here).

Inflammation:

CBD oil interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system. This is the system in the body that manages inflammation and pain. CBD oil has shown positive responses to CBD oil for pain and inflammation. In this study, it was concluded  that CBD oil can reduce pain and other symptoms for those who suffer from arthritic conditions. Those who have other conditions, such as MS, Neuropathy, chronic pain, and rheumatoid disorders can benefit from the anti-inflammatory effects of CBD oil. (Want to know more about how inflammation wreaks havoc on the body, check out my blog here).

Epilepsy in children is the only disease that the FDA has approved for the use of CBD oil in children. Adults have also shown positive outcomes with this therapy. The FDA has approved Epidiolex for this purpose for those who suffer from Lennox-Gastaut, Dravet syndrome, or tuberous sclerosis complex. There is still ongoing research for this use, but what has been completed is promising. According to the Neurology Center for Epilespy and Seizures, clinical studies have shown “a significant reductions in seizures” in patients. However, CBD oil can interact with other seizure medications, so talking with your physician is critical before starting CBD oil therapy.
